MEJN held regional capacity building workshops in Lilongwe and Blantyre of Civil Society Organisations, Faith Leaders and Media on Special Drawing Rights SDRs following a research study conducted that examined best options and utilization of the SDRs in Malawi in response to the economic crises faced by countries that was triggered by the Covid-19 Pandemic which Malawi is not exceptional.
This is with funding from Christian Aid under an initiative “SDRs for People’s Recovery”
In 2019 the IMF approved $650 billion allocation of the SDRs in response to the Economic Crises globally. This was a historic achievement for CSOs efforts globally pushing for this much needed liquidity for the global south, to respond to the pandemic
Owing to this IMF believed that using SDRs for People’s Recovery during and after this crisis period countries will be able to
1. Buy vaccines
2. Invest in economic recovery and;
3. Become less indebted
SDRs are international reserve assets created by the IMF to supplement the official reserves of members countries
